Metairie, AL

Metairie is located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain between New Orleans and Kenner, and is currently the largest community in Jefferson Parish. The community has become known for its vibrant shopping centers and its amazing atmosphere. The name “Metairie” derives from a French term for a small tenant farm that paid the landlord with a share of produce, also referred to as sharecropping. In fact, many of the early settlers of Metairie were sharecroppers, primarily because of the fertile soil of the land due to Lake Pontchartrain, before both the areas of Metairie and New Orleans grew into the economic hubs they are today.

Metairie’s Veteran Memorial Boulevard has become the center of commerce in the community. Spanning the Boulevard is Lakeside Shopping City, the highest-grossing shopping center in the Southeast, and “Fat City,” known for unique murals and a variety of restaurants and retailers. Right on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain rests “Bucktown.” What was once a small fishing village is now a thriving community with the best seafood markets and restaurants along the Gulf Coast. At the end of the day, there is nothing like catching the sunset on the Bucktown Marsh Boardwalk.

The city of Metairie is proud to host festivities year-round that encourage both residents and visitors to participate. Our favorite festivals hosted in the city of Metairie include Family Gras, the Old Metairie Irish Festival and the Bucktown Seafood Festival. Each festival offers something unique and something the whole family will enjoy! Metairie is also home to the training facilities of the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans, so fans are able to visit the Lombardi Trophy in the Saints Museum.
